DAYTON, Ohio — FIU's volleyball program closed its opening weekend of competition in 2024 with a defeat to No. 22 Dayton.
The Panthers (0-3) matched up with their first ranked opponent of the season, taking on No. 22 and host-Dayton. FIU fought with the Flyers in all three frames, but fell in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19.
Anna Feldkamp led the attack with seven kills while Jillian Huckabey had six kills, four in the final set. Kira Givans chipped in five kills and attacked at a .267 clip.
Huckabey also had two aces. Kaylee Musick facilitated the attacked with 23 kills. Mandi Morioka had a season-high 17 digs.
In the opening frame, FIU trailed just 14-11 after a Travel Morris kill. Dayton then used a 5-0 run to fuel its 25-17 victory. The Panthers trailed early in the second set and could not overcome that deficit, falling 25-15.
FIU fought hard in the third set as Huckabey had four kills and two aces in the frame, the last one of which brought the Panthers within two at 19-17.
A kill from Feldkamp and ensuing Dayton error again put FIU behind just two at 21-19, but the Flyers scored the final four tallies to secure the match victory.
