Volleyball Sweeps Stetson

FIU hosts the '305 Challenge' next weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. — FIU's volleyball program defeated Stetson 3-0 on Saturday to conclude the South Carolina Invitational. 

The Panthers (2-8) cruised to their first sweep of the season, winning by set scores of 29-27, 25-19 and 25-23. Anna Feldkamp led FIU with 12 kills while Jillian Huckabey was also in double-digits with 10 kills. 

Mandi Morioka had a strong day defensively with a team-high 19 digs. Colby Lane helped to anchor the back line with 13 digs. Travel Morris was outstanding at the net, racking up 6.0 blocks. 

Savannah Cook facilitated the offense with 31 assists. Kira Givans had seven kills in three sets. 

Set one was back-and-forth between the two Florida-foes. Courtney O'Brien picked up a kill for FIU to give the Panthers a 13-11 lead at the midway point. With the score tied at 27-all, FIU scored the final two points, capped by a Givans kill, to take set one, 29-27.

The Panthers built a big lead in set two with a 7-0 run, which gave FIU a 15-8 advantage. FIU used this to advantage to the finish line as Julia Thomas picked up the set-winning kill for a 25-19 victory. 

In set three, FIU trailed for much of the frame, however the Panthers stormed back late. Down 21-17, FIU ripped off six-straight points to pull in front. Tied at 23-all, Travel Morris picked up a kill before Huckabey's match-winning ace to seal the set, 25-23. 

As a team, FIU had 42 kills to Stetson's 29 and also had seven service aces. 

UP NEXT

FIU host its '305 Challenge' next weekend, Sept. 19-21. The Panthers take on Texas Tech in the opening match on Thursday at 6 p.m. inside the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
