Men's Soccer Falls Just Short in 2-1 Loss to USF

Mustre scores fourth goal of season in the loss

MIAMI– Despite firing 16 shots and seven on goal, FIU men's soccer (5-6-2, 3-2-0 American) couldn't find the equalizer in a 2-1 loss to USF (7-0-5, 3-0-1) on Sunday night.

The Bulls had two strikes in quick succession midway through the first frame, scoring in the 22nd and 28 minutes to get an advantage. Even with a late onslaught from the Panthers, the visitors held that same lead heading into the halftime break.

FIU found the back of the net early on in the second stanza to get back in the game. João Domíngues had a burst of speed down the left side and sent an arcing cross to Eduardo Mustre, who cashed in on his fourth tally of the season in the 55th minute.

The Panthers had a strong effort to close the game, but couldn't get one to go, recording five shots with two on goal in the remaining 35 minutes of play. USF improved its unbeaten record to  7-0-5, winning its last two matches in the series history against FIU.

Nigel Van Haveren turned aside three of five shots on goals in the loss, and five Panthers competed for a full 90 minutes, including Mustre, who had three shots in the contest.
