MIAMI – FIU Women's Soccer (7-5-3, 4-3 CUSA) secured a 1-0 victory over Louisiana Tech (4-12-1, 3-4 CUSA) on Sunday afternoon, clinching a spot in the 2025 Conference USA Tournament for the third consecutive season.
The match was tightly contested from the opening whistle, with both teams creating early chances. FIU tallied six shots, including two on goal, while LA Tech recorded five shots and three on target in the first half.
The Panthers broke the scoreless tie midway through the opening period when junior Mona Gellert delivered a well-placed corner kick that found senior Kennedy Floyd, who headed home her first goal of the season at the 22:41 mark. The assist marked Gellert's second of the year, tying her for second on the team. FIU carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Coming out of the break, both teams continued to apply pressure. LA Tech pushed for the equalizer with six shots, five of them on goal, while FIU added nine more attempts on the offensive end. Despite the back-and-forth action, neither side found the back of the net, sealing the Panthers' win and snapping their three-match losing skid.
FIU finished with 15 total shots in the match, led by senior Chinatsu Kaio with four attempts and one on goal. Seniors Brealyn Viamille and Kennedy Floyd each added three shots, with Floyd netting the match's lone goal.
Junior goalkeeper Valery Restrepo followed up her career-high seven saves from the Panthers' previous outing against Sam Houston with a new career-best eight saves against Louisiana Tech. The Colombia native now owns four clean sheets and 57 saves on the season.
