COLUMBIA, S.C. – The FIU men's soccer program dropped a 3-2 decision to South Carolina on Tuesday night at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
In a 1-1 match late in the second half, FIU pulled ahead in the 70th minute on a goal from Pasquale Capriati, before South Carolina answered with back-to-back goals, including the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute.
The Panthers struck first in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick from Leonardo Consoloni. Defender Owen Travis flicked a header to Johan Helan, who finished for his first career goal. Consoloni and Travis each recorded their first assist of the season on the play.
FIU carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime, but the Gamecocks leveled the score in the 48th minute. The Panthers regained the lead in the 70th when Dominic Brady fired a left-footed shot that deflected to Capriati, who converted his second goal of the year. Brady earned his first assist of the season on the sequence.
South Carolina equalized again in the 75th minute before securing the decisive goal seven minutes later.
FIU outshot the Gamecocks 13-8, led by four attempts from Consoloni. Helan put both of his shots on frame, including his goal, while Enrique Mutsoli also registered a shot on target.
Goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren recorded two saves, bringing his season total to 18. Consoloni, Joao Domingues, Alfonso Gilleard-Soriano, Scott Neil, and Nicolas Villalobos each went the full 90 minutes.
