Women's Soccer Wins First Conference Matchup Against Jacksonville State on Sunday Afternoon

Adria Kitzinger tied the game in the first half, while Mariana Barretto put the Panthers on top in the second half

MIAMI — Women's soccer (4-5-3, 1-2-0 CUSA) wins their first match of CUSA-play in a 2-1 result over Jacksonville State (3-7-3, 0-2-1 CUSA) on Sunday afternoon.

FIU controlled possession early, getting off three shots in the first 10 minutes of the game. Despite the Panther chances, the Gamecocks struck first, scoring in the tenth minute to take a 1-0 lead early.

The Panthers would not have to wait too long to respond, tying up the match at one-a-piece at the 27:08 mark thanks to Adria Kitzinger's second goal of the season. FIU and Jacksonville State would take the match into the half tied, 1-1.

The Panthers took the lead early out of the break. Junior Kiara Clarke sent a perfect pass into the box and connected with the head of Mariana Barreto, giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute. The goal was Barreto's second of the season, giving her six total points on the year, while Clarke's assist was her first of the campaign.

The FIU defense held strong, not allowing another goal for the remainder of the match and handing the Panthers their first win of conference-play.

The Panthers got off 19 shots and eight shots on goal in the contest, their second most shots in a game this season. Mariana Barreto led the way with four shots and one shot on goal, while a plethora of Panthers ended with two shots one shot on goal. Senior Adria Kitzinger led the team in shots on goal with two.

Goalkeeper Valery Restrepo held strong for the majority of the contents, ending the match with two saves on 11 shots seen, bringing her to 42 saves on the year.

FIU will hit the road and head to Lynchburg, Virginia to play Liberty on Sunday, October 11 at 1 p.m.
