MIAMI– After her performance in the pentathlon over the weekend at the Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational, FIU women's track & field freshman
Itsaso Madariaga Huegun was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league announced.
In just her second collegiate meet, Madariaga Huegun broke the school record in the pentathlon by scoring a 3848. The record was initially set in 2022 by assistant coach
Fabiola Declet, and her performance placed her second in the pentathlon at the Dr. Rick McGuire Invitational, out-pacing all other freshmen in the event and finishing just behind the event leader, Missouri's Brianna Utecht.
During the event, she placed first in the 800m with a time of 2:24.20, following that with a second-place performance in the high jump at 5.80m.
In the pentathlon, the Spain native is now ranked No. 2 in CUSA and No. 44 in the NCAA.
FIU is back in action in 11 days at the Music City Challenge.
