LYNCHBURG, Va. – FIU's baseball program fell to the Liberty Flames, 7-1, Saturday afternoon at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Conference USA (CUSA) play.
FIU (8-19, 1-7 CUSA) struck first as leadoff hitter
Cooper Rasmussen launched a solo homer to right field on the game's first pitch, his seventh of the season, marking back-to-back games with a home run and extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Liberty responded with seven unanswered runs. The Flames tied the game in the second on an RBI sacrifice bunt, then added three runs in the fourth on a solo home run, an RBI walk, and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-1 lead. Two more runs crossed in the sixth, and an RBI groundout in the eighth pushed the advantage to 7-1.
On the mound,
Enrique Sierra made his first start of the season, allowing four earned runs over 3.1 innings (career-high).
Tyrus Riley struck out two in 1.2 innings while giving up one earned run.
Jordan Vargas added two scoreless innings, and righty
Rene Lastres worked the eighth inning.
Offensively, FIU tallied four hits.
Marc Hersh recorded a multi-hit game, while Rasmussen added two hits for his eighth multi-hit effort of the season.
