MIAMI – The FIU baseball program fell 9-4 to Boston College on Wednesday night at FIU Baseball Stadium, closing out the two-game midweek series.
After Boston College plated two runs in the third inning, FIU (7-7) cut the deficit in half on an RBI groundout in the bottom frame. The Eagles, however, pulled away with four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to secure the series victory.
Jarek Woodward made the start for FIU, tossing two scoreless innings before Boston College broke through with a two-run triple in the third to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half,
Vicente Feliciano reached on an error and advanced to third before
Preston Leon grounded out to shortstop, scoring Feliciano to make it 2-1.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the sixth, capitalizing on an error, an RBI single and a two-run double to push the lead to 6-1. Boston College added a three-run homer in the seventh to stretch the margin to 9-1.
FIU answered in the bottom of the seventh.
Samuel Fischer reached on a fielder's choice before
Aidan Cohall delivered a two-run single to left-center, trimming the deficit to 9-4.
Woodward took his first loss of the season, allowing two runs over three innings with three strikeouts.
Enrique Sierra provided two scoreless innings with three punchouts in relief.
Tracen Cameron surrendered three earned runs in one inning, while
Clayton Sherwood allowed three earned in 0.1 innings.
Cooper Foster was a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing 2.2 no-hit innings with three strikeouts.
Offensively, Cohall and
Andrew Ildefonso each recorded multi-hit performances. Fischer added a single and reached base three times with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
UP NEXT
FIU is set for a home-and-home series with Florida Atlantic from March 6 - March 8. The Panthers will play in Boca Raton on March 6 and March 8 before a contest in Miami on March 7.
