BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FIU baseball program fell to Florida Atlantic, 14-2, in seven innings Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.
In the first game of a home-and-home series, FIU (7-8) struck first in the second inning on an RBI single from Aris Rivera that scored Hector Candelas. Florida Atlantic responded with a four-run third inning and added three more in the fourth to take control and secure the series-opening victory.
After building a 7-1 lead, the Owls added two runs in the fifth before erupting for five more in the sixth to extend the advantage to 14-1.
FIU added its second run in the seventh when Trey Freeman blasted a solo home run for his first collegiate hit and home run.
On the mound, Preston Prince made his first start as a Panther, striking out two across two scoreless innings. Quin McManmon allowed four runs in one inning, while Mason Koczwara surrendered five runs over two innings of work. Rene Lastres and Taggert Cameron also made appearances out of the bullpen.
Offensively, FIU recorded six hits, led by Rivera's two-hit performance. Candelas, Vicente Feliciano, Samuel Fischer and Freeman each added a hit in the loss.
