With more than half of its roster comprised of new players the FIU baseball team has such a different look this coming season that you might need to hand out "Hello, My Name is" stickers at the FIU ballpark. Since there are so many new faces, from now until Opening Day on Feb. 16 when Missouri comes to town for a three-game series, we'll profile the newest Panthers as well as the returning FIU ballplayers.
 
STEVEN CASEY, RHP, Freshman
 
What were you doing last baseball season?

SC: I was playing at Hebron Christian Academy in Georgia. I was a two-way player in high school. I was a shortstop/pitcher but now I'm just sticking to pitching. My strength has always been pitching.

What is your best baseball experience?

SC: In both my sophomore and junior years I played in the state championship. We were runner-up both years but it was still a great experience. I'll never forget those teams.

Give me an example of something that makes baseball such a great game.

SC: When Curt Schilling was pitching for the Red Sox and he had that bloody sock and was still pitching. That really showed the heart and determination that nothing was going to stop Schilling from winning that ALCS game against the Yankees.



Tell me something away from baseball about you that someone might find interesting?

SC: It might not look like it but I love country music. Being from Georgia a lot of people like country music. I love all things country. I like all of Brett Young's songs. He's amazing.

FIU coach Mervyl Melendez says about Casey:

"Casey will be utilized out of the bullpen. He had a very strong fall. He will most likely be a middle reliever for us this year."
