MIAMI – A pair of second half goals
by junior Tamara
Kochen separated by 24 seconds led the
FIU women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over
Arkansas State on Sunday afternoon at University
Park.
The win raises the Golden Panthers' home
record to 5-0 on the season, 6-9 overall
and 4-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. The
loss drops the visiting Indians to 5-11-1
overall and 1-5-1 in the conference.
In the opening half, ASU dominated the
offense outshooting FIU, 7-1. Answering
the Indians' attack was FIU freshman Madeline
Gannon, who recorded her first shutout
of her young career, making five saves.
In the second half, a re-energized FIU
team came out attacking the ASU defense.
With the Golden Panthers' second shot of
the half, Kochen scored the first of her
two goals at the 52:30 mark. She beat a
trailing Indians' defender, chipping a shot
past the ASU goalkeeper to give FIU a 1-0
lead.
Following an Indians' foul, FIU extended
its lead to 2-0 when junior Carly Goldich
launched a shot towards the ASU goal. The
ball bounced over the outstretched hands
of the Indians' goalkeeper Brielan Smiechowski
where an alert Kochen connected on the header
for the goal at the 52:54 mark.
Prior to the contest, the Golden Panthers
honored its three seniors - Renee
Cagnina, Charissa
Gingerich and Megan
Meade. The Golden Panthers will next
