MIAMI ? Aggressive play over the course of 110 minutes between cross-town rivals Miami and FIU led to a 0-0 tie in women's soccer action on Wednesday night at University Park.
The aggressive play led to a combined 40 fouls and four yellow cards to be distributed between the two teams. Both teams shared tenacious defense in the goal mouth area and received strong play from goalkeepers Laura Snell of FIU and Lauren McAdam of Miami. Snell made a match-high seven saves, including four in the second half; while, McAdam had five saves.
The draw is the third on the season for the Golden Panthers, who are now 2-1-3. For Miami, it is their first tie and they are now 4-2-1. It is also the first tie in an eight-match series history between the two schools while five of the other meetings have been decided by one goal.
FIU junior Valerie Patrick had a team-high three shots, including two on goal. UM's Bryn Heincke had a match-high six shots for the Hurricanes, including three on goal. The Hurricanes held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Janet Liguori created the first opportunity for the Golden Panthers in the 35th minute as she went 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper before a collapsing UM defense converged on the top FIU scorer to end the threat.
The Hurricanes enjoyed the majority of the play in the second half with seven shots and seven corner kicks. In the 50th minute, UM's Corynn Corino attempted a header in a scramble in front of the FIU goal that Snell brought in for a save. In the 72nd minute Snell, with the help of defender Kristy Webb, closed down an open-net opportunity for UM's Rachel Rigamat after having slipped to the ground. As regulation was drawing to a close, Miami had opportunities in the 86th minute and in the 90th minute; however, Snell was there to send the match into overtime.
In the two extra periods, Miami was able to get off four more shots against the Golden Panthers. Heincke nearly came up with the gamewinner in the 107th minute, but Snell answered the challenge with her seventh save of the contest.
