MIAMI ? UCF scored two second-half goals in the span of six minutes to break a tie game as the Golden Knights defeated Florida International, 3-1, in non-conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at University Park.
Â
Freshman Marina Pappas (Lancaster, Pa.) scored her first career goal to level the match for the Golden Panthers (0-2) at 1-1 in the 59th minute after Jessica Hallgren had opened the scoring for UCF (1-1) in the first half. Hallgren tacked on an insurance tally in the 68th minute after Hanna Wilde scored her first of the season in the 62nd minute, which proved to be the game winner.
Â
UCF out-shot FIU, 22-11, in the contest as junior goalkeeper Madeline Gannon (Ft. Myers, Fla.) made a career-high nine saves to keep the match within reach for the Golden Panthers.
Â
The Golden Knights used a set piece to grab a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Becca Thomas took the free kick from just beyond the left corner of the penalty area which was met by Hallgren and directed in the back of the net toward the top of the near post.
Â
FIU created a great chance quickly level the match five minutes later when Kristy Webb (St. Paul, Minn.) crossed from the right to an unmarked Pappas who saw her volley from six yards out sail over the goal.
Â
UCF nearly made it a two-goal advantage before the break when Kate McCain intercepted a back header from midfield and made a run into the box only to see her 43rd-minute effort from a left angle glance back into play off the far post.
Â
Pappas made up for her earlier miss when she equalized for FIU on a set piece in the 59th minute. Francesca Chong (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) sent a free kick from 40 yards out by the left touch line which was flicked past UCF goalkeeper Jennifer Manis by Pappas in front of goal.
Â
Three minutes later, Wilde scored on an inswinging corner that went untouched and in at the near post. The Golden Knights then put the game away in the 68th minute when Wilde's cross from the left side of the area found an unmarked Hallgren at the far post which the junior easily headed home for a 3-1 lead.
