Middle Tennessee Shuts Out Women?s Soccer 2-0

MIAMI ? A pair of goals from Holly Grogan lifted Middle Tennessee past Florida International, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference women's soccer action at University Park.

The win gives the Blue Raiders a record of 8-2 on the year and 2-0 in Sun Belt play, while the Golden Panthers fall to 2-6 and 0-2 in conference.

The Blue Raiders got on the scoreboard in the fifth minute on the game's first scoring opportunity.  Rebecca Rodriguez sent a through ball to Holly Grogan out on the right wing.  Grogan, through on goal, then continued her run into the box and beat FIU goalkeeper Madeline Gannon (Ft. Myers, Fla.) with a low shot from 10 yards out to the far left corner.

Middle Tennesse would add to their lead in the 59th minute when Mary Zapapas sent a cross from the left side of the penalty area to the far post which was met with a volley by Grogan for her second goal of the contest.

Gannon made a game-high four saves for the Golden Panthers while Blue Raider keeper Erynn Murray made one.  Middle Tennessee used a 12-4 advantage in shots en route to the win, although FIU did lead 3-1 in corner kicks.

Just two minutes after Middle Tennessee opened the scoring, the Golden Panthers nearly capitalized on a mistake in the back by the Blue Raiders.  Murray waited too long to distribute the ball and sophomore forward Maria Gualdron (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) nearly capitalized by running up and getting a deflection on her kick, however the ball was knocked right back to a Blue Raider defender who was able to clear the ball out.

The next best opportunity of the first half for FIU came in the 15th minute when sophomore Francesca Chong (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) too a shot from five yards beyond the penalty area which was intended for the upper far right corner but was saved.

A poor clearance out of the back by the Golden Panthers led to another Middle Tennessee opportunity.  The Blue Raiders wound up getting a free kick about 25 yards out from goal, just off to the right corner of the area.  Rodriquez sent the free kick toward the far post which was met by the head of Kaley Forrest, but Gannon was there to make the save.

After the break, the Blue Raiders would have added to their lead if not for a save by Gannon in the 54th minute.  Katy Rayburn sent a through ball to Grogan down the right side of the field. Grogan then crossed to a wide open Kala Morgan with a wide open net at the far post, but she was unable to control the ball in time and Gannon came racing over to make the save at her feet.

Katy Daley nearly made it a three-goal lead in the 78th minute when her effort from 23 yards ricocheted off the cross bar.  Morgan then had an opportunity in the 89th minute to make up for her chance earlier in the half when she was given space at the top of the box, took the shot which was saved by Gannon, and then tried to follow up with the header but could not direct it into the net as it went harmlessly wide.

The Golden Panthers return to action Friday evening with the first of a four-match conference road swing at defending Sun Belt champions North Texas at 8 p.m. (Eastern).
