Strong Second Half Play Not Enough to Boost Women's Soccer to Win

MIAMI - The FIU women's soccer team found its rhythm in the second half but came up short against Cal Poly on Friday night, losing 3-1.

The Mustangs took an early lead after Morgan Miller drew out goalie Melanie Raimo and managed to get a wide open look at the goal from the right side at 6:10 into the game.

Julie McKee hit the back of the net just before the 20-minute mark to increase the lead, 2-0. After halftime, Cici Kobinski worked inside the box for a head-on look to give Cal Poly its final goal.

The Golden Panthers made the Mustangs work in the second half, forcing Coral Hoover to make four saves on eight of their shots. Cortney Bergin scored her first career goal at 67:36 in the game.

FIU nearly scored twice more after the goal. Madeleine Hjorth-Stalgren found Katrina Rose in the box, but her header hit the crossbar with 14 minutes remaining.

Eight minutes later, April Perry entered the ball off a corner kick to Hjorth-Stalgren, and this time her kick hit the crossbar.

"Cal Poly did a good job making us play to them. They controlled the tempo of the game, but in the second half I feel like we figured some things out and played a little better and created some more opportunities," Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "We got unlucky with hitting the frame twice. We get one of those - it's 3-2 and it's a tight game again."

The Golden Panthers host North Florida on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
