Big Final Day Leads FIU to Fourth-Place Finish at Johnie Imes

MIAMI, FLA. (FIUSports.com) – Senior Tania Tare (Auckland, New Zealand) hit a tournament record-low 63 (-9) in the final round to jump into a tie for third-place and help propel FIU into a fourth-place finish at the Sixth Annual Johnie Imes Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event was hosted by the University of Missouri at the par-72, 6,234-yard Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo.

Tare, who began the day tied for 34th, finished tied for third along with FIU teammate freshman Meghan MacLaren (Cambridge, U.K.), with both golfers concluding 54 holes at even par, 216.

The stellar effort from Tare and MacLaren helped the Panthers finish in a tie for fourth in the team standings at 29-over, 893 (302-303-288). FIU's final day 288 was the second-lowest team score of the tournament, to SMU's second round 284. Among the 19 schools and 99 golfers competing, FIU was tied with No. 29 Indiana, and only trailed event champion No. 38 SMU (876), event host Missouri (885) and Kansas State (888).

A week after winning her first collegiate tournament in her FIU debut at the University of Michigan's Wolverine Invitational, MacLaren (70-73-73) would be among the top three golfers all 54 holes at the Johnie Imes, finishing third after each round among the strong field.

Tare (77-76-63) arguably had her best round of her collegiate career on Tuesday resulting in her top finish in a 54-hole tournament.

SMU's Melanie White was the tournament medalist with a record-low 54-hole 208 (-8), followed by Kansas State's Whitney Pyle's two-under, 214.

Junior Shelby Coyle (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) finished in a tie for 30th with an 11-over 227 (78-76-73). Senior Yolecci Jimenez (Caracas, Venezuela) tied for 56th with an 18-over, 234 (77-78-79). Freshman Carla Jane (Santiago, Chile) rounded out the starting five tied for 71st at 24-over, 240 (81-78-81).

Next up for FIU will be hosting the 35th Annual FIU Pat Bradley Invitational at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club in Sarasota, Fla., Oct. 21-23.
