Volz Lifts Panthers Past Hilltoppers, 1-0, in Overtime

Box Score  MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2012) – Sophomore Johanna Volz notched her third goal of the season in 95th minute to lift the FIU women's soccer team (6-5-1, 3-1-0 SBC) past the WKU Hilltoppers (8-4-0, 3-1-0 SBC), 1-0, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the FIU Soccer Stadium.

The golden goal was set up by sophomore Scarlett Montoya, who found Volz streaking into the right side of the area. Volz one-timed the shot near post, beating WKU goalkeeper Nikki Hall and ending the game, 1-0.

"It was a great game," Head Coach Thomas Chestnutt said. "They play good soccer. They battle and are physical and they're a technical team. It was a back-and-forth match.
The last two times that we played them have gone to 0-0 draws. This time we got the goal in the overtime. So, we are excited about that as well as getting back to our winning ways at home. I couldn't be happier for our girls."

"It feels great," Volz said. "I was nice to close this game out. We had a little rivalry with WKU from last year and it was nice to bounce back after Friday's loss to Middle Tennessee."

In a defensive battle through 90 minutes of action, neither team was able to find the back of the net. WKU held a 9-8 edge in total shots during regulation, with five shots on frame compared to just two for FIU. However, the Panthers pressured the WKU defense early in the first overtime period, resulting in the goal by Volz.

In the 95th minute Montoya dribbled the ball across the top of the 18-yard box and pushed a pass to Volz, who came running into the area for the game-winning goal.
Montoya, a native of Miami, was credited with her second assist of the season on the play.

Defensively, FIU kept WKU in check, disrupting a number of Hilltopper chances and controlling the play in Panthers' third of the field.

"Today we played pretty well as a defensive unit," sophomore defender Caroline Hernandez said. "In practice, we have been working on pinching in so no one splits us and I
think we did a good job with that today. Jazmin (Jones) did really well for us at center back. As a freshman she really stepped up. As a team, I thought we did a good job of
creating chances."

Redshirt junior Kaitlyn Savage picked up her sixth win of the season, making five saves en route to her fifth shutout of the campaign.

For the game, FIU out-shot WKU, 10-9, while the Hilltoppers notched six corner kicks, three more than the Panthers.

The win improved FIU to 4-1 at home this season and handed WKU its first conference loss of the season.

FIU will travel to Denton, Texas, to take on the North Texas Mean Green on Sunday, Oct. 7. Game time is 2:00 p.m. ET.
