MIAMI (Oct. 31, 2013) – The FIU women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season Thursday night with a tough, 1-0, loss to Marshall. The Panthers finished their first season in Conference USA with a 7-11-0 overall record and went .500 in C-USA action (5-5-0).
The Herd scored the lone goal of the game in the 21st minute when Lia Foster hit the far post off a free kick from 30 yards out. Freshman Vanessa Plasenica put a good effort on the ball, but it sailed, top shelf over the Miami native's head.
The freshman had a solid save two minutes later to keep the Herd at bay. Off a kick from 24 yards out, Plasencia dove left, stopping the well placed shot from going in.
The Panthers back line was solid all night. Sophomore
Jazmin Jones threw her body in front of a Marshall shot from the center of the box, stopping a potential second Herd goal, while sophomore
Madlen Weinhardt relentlessly tried to get her team going in the second half, carrying the ball down the wing frequently to facilitate to teammates. Senior
Kim Lopez led the team with three shots, while Weinhardt notched two.
"They contributed a lot to the program the past four years," said Head Coach
Thomas Chestnutt. "We're turning to the tournament now."
C-USA tournament action begins next week from Houston, Texas.
