Twenty-nine Panthers on Friday's active roster have played at least one game in the annual Florida Atlantic Series. Redshirt senior Markeith Russell has the earliest appearance, dating back to his true freshman season in 2009. Russell, Isame Faciane, Greg Hickman and Sam Miller lead the team with three all-time appearances vs. Florida Atlantic. Quarterback Jake Medlock is the only player with two starts.
With FIU's large roster turnover in 2013, just four players on this year's active roster started in last year's Florida Atlantic game: Greg Hickman (DE), Jake Medlock (QB), Donald Senat (RG) and Zach Schaubhut (TE). However, 22 total players on the current FIU roster did play in that 2012 game. Overall, only six current players have started against Florida Atlantic: Markeith Russell (2010), Sam Miller (2011), Greg Hickman (2012), Jake Medlock (2011-12), Donald Senat (2012) and Zach Schaubhut (2012).

The Panthers are entering the Shula Bowl match-up against Florida Atlantic coming off a 48-10 loss to possible Conference USA East Division champion and bowl-bound Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium.
Marshall and East Carolina are both atop the East Division with identical 6-1 league marks and face off Friday, Nov. 29, in Huntington, W.V. for a spot in the title game. Rice (6-1) leads the West Division, ahead of three teams at 5-2.
Florida Atlantic enters this Friday's game off a 55-10 home victory over non-conference New Mexico State on Nov. 23. The win was Florida Atlantic's third-straight and pushes the Owls (5-6) just one game away from bowl eligibility.
FIU's final two road games at UTEP (Nov. 16) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 29) mark the extreme furthest and closest trips the Panthers will travel in 2013. UTEP was 1,630 miles by plane, while a trip to FAU Stadium is 56 miles by bus.

FIU - FLORIDA ATLANTIC: THE SERIES
Florida Atlantic is the longest on-going series with any opponent dating back to FIU's inaugural 2002 season. The Owls own the on-field series advantage, 8-3 (8-2), with the 2005 victory later being vacated.
2013 marks the third occasion Florida Atlantic's Interim Head Coach Brian Wright will face FIU. Prior to the 2012 meeting at FAU Stadium, Wright served as the Quarterbacks Coach at Youngstown State in 2004 when the Penguins fell to FIU at home 22-16 in overtime.
FAU stadium is the sixth site the Shula Bowl game has been played. The series started at Sun Life Stadium (formerly Pro Player/Dolphin). FAU hosted 2010 at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, while FIU hosted 2007 at the Orange Bowl. Earlier FIU home games were at the former FIU Community Stadium site, before it was rebuilt into the present Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium.
