Box Score 2 MIAMI (Feb. 13, 2013) – The Panthers were blanked in the first game of a doubleheader, 10-0, via mercy-rule, but responded with an extra-inning, 3-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday night at the FIU Softball Complex.
FIU (2-5) rebounded from a defeat in dramatic fashion, scoring on an error by the FGCU second baseman, Brittney Garabedian, who covered first base, but was unable to hold onto the throw from pitcher, Jaclyn Owen (0-1).
Panthers hurler
Corinne Jenkins (2-1) earned the win, coming on in relief for
Shelbie Wagnon in the first inning, giving Head Coach
Jake Schumann 7 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, on one run, allowing FIU to keep the game close. Jenkins recorded nine strikeouts without allowing a walk.
Trailing 2-0 after three innings, the Panthers cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Jessy Alfonso struck a one-out double to left, and would later score on a
Kayla Burri single.
Rachel Slowik ignited a game-tying rally in the bottom of the fifth, singling to left-center and advanced to second on a throwing error by the centerfielder. A base hit by Alfonso and booted ball by the left fielder allowed her to score to tie the game.
FIU escaped in the top of the eighth inning when catcher
Aleima Lopez fielded a suicide-squeeze by Lanier, tagging out Kelsey Carpenter at home and firing a strike to first base to double up the batter.
In the night's first game, FIU's
Mariah Dawson (0-3) took the loss, throwing four innings, yielding nine hits, six runs (all earned), walking three and striking out six Eagles.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the third, FGCU pulled away from FIU in the fourth frame, scoring five times, capped off by a three-run double by Lanier.
FIU manufactured just three hits, two belonging to
Shelby Graves.
FIU next will participate in the Felsberg Memorial Tournament from Feb. 15-17. They will host Morehead St. at 4 p.m., and UConn at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the FIU Softball Complex.
