Lopez’s five-hit day ignites a pair of 6-3 victories over North Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jacksonville, Fla. (March 13, 2013) – The Panthers (18-13) left Jacksonville with a pair of 6-3 victories over North Florida (20-9) on Wednesday afternoon at the North Florida Softball Stadium.

In game one, North Florida took a first-inning lead against FIU starter, Corinne Jenkins (9-2).

Kelly Wilson led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Hendrix.

Ashley Holton drove a single past third base, driving in Wilson and advanced to third on the throw home to give UNF the 1-0 lead.

Marissa Thomas made it 2-0 with a single through the left side, plating Holton, to give the Ospreys a 2-0 advantage.

Two batters later, Jackie Reese made the tally, 3-0 with a single to left, scoring Thomas from second base.

The Panthers rallied for two runs in the fourth inning after the first two batters were retired.

Bre Kaye and Nicole Rascon both reached on singles, setting up a double down the right field line by Jessy Alfonso, plating Kaye and Rascon to bring the Panthers within a run at 3-2.

FIU took the lead in the fifth inning, after a two-RBI triple by Rachel Slowik, plating Krystal Garcia and Kennah Orr, making it a 4-3 game in favor of the Panthers.

The Panthers put the game away an inning later, adding two more on an RBI double by Rojas and an RBI single by Kayla Burri.

In game two, FIU struck for three runs in the opening frame.

Aleima Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Panthers on the board, 1-0.

Garcia hit into a fielder's choice and to drive in Rojas and a wild pitch during Orr's at-bat allowed Burri to score from third base, putting FIU ahead early, 3-0.

Kaye collected one of her three RBI's in the fourth, singling home Garcia to make the score, 4-0.

FIU responded to UNF's run in the bottom of the fourth with another two-run single in the sixth from Kaye, giving the Panthers a five-run cushion at 6-1.

Lopez turned in a 5-for-8 with an RBI performance in both games.

Shelby Graves earned her third win of the season to improve to 3-1, giving her team six innings, allowing six hits, three runs (all earned) three walks and striking out five.

FIU will next host Middle Tennessee on Saturday, March 16 in a doubleheader, first pitch set for 4 p.m.
