FIU Golf Sits in Fifth Place at Notre Dame Clover Cup

MIAMI, FLA. (FIUSports.com) – FIU heads into Sunday's final round of the 2013 Notre Dame Clover Cup in fifth place among the 16 schools competing in this year's event. The Panthers finished 36 holes on Saturday, 19-over (305-290-595), six strokes behind fourth-place and 11th-ranked Texas Tech (+13). No. 3 Oklahoma leads the event at six-under, followed by No. 34 SMU (+7) and No. 27 Northwestern (+12).

Rain in the Phoenix area on Friday had forced the first round to be played on Saturday morning at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., followed by the second round during the afternoon. Sunday's third-round is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. MST (11 a.m. EST). FIU will be paired with Texas Tech and Notre Dame on the final day.

In the second round, FIU rebounded with one of the top team scores on the afternoon (290) helping erase a tough start in the morning, which saw the Panthers finish the first 18 holes sitting in 11th with a team score of 305.  FIU's impressive second-round 290 was only behind SMU (284) and Oklahoma (289).

Host-school and 22nd-ranked Notre Dame sits one stroke behind FIU in sixth-place at 20-over (298-298-596).

FIU freshman Meghan MacLaren (Cambridge, U.K.) leads all Panthers at two-over (72-74-146), good for 13th place. SMU's Jenny Haglund leads the field of 96 competitors at six-under (71-67-318).

Junior Shelby Coyle (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), tied for 21st, scored the second-best finish for FIU at five-over (79-70-149). Senior Yolecci Jimenez (Caracas, Venezuela) is tied for 27th (+6, 77-73-150), followed by senior Tania Tare (Auckland, New Zealand) and Sophie Godley (Nottinghamshire, U.K), both tied for 47th at 10-over. Tare scored a 77 in both rounds to finish with 154 strokes, while Godley started with an 81 in the first round then a 73 in the second to also score 154 strokes. Freshman Jasmine Wade (Oldsmar, Florida), competing as an individual, is tied for 55th at 11-over (80-75-155).
