MIAMI (Sept. 29, 2013) – The FIU women's soccer team improved to 3-7-0,1-1-0 on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Old Dominion (0-8-1, 0-2-0) at the FIU Soccer Stadium. The win was the first conference victory of the season for the Panthers.
“It feels great to get our first conference win of the season,” said Head Coach
Thomas Chestnutt. I thought the team came out with a positive attitude and we got after it early, which we continued into the second half. We're really excited about the outcome today.”
FIU went ahead,1-0, in the 21st minute when junior
Ashleigh Shim drew a foul in the box after getting tangled with an Old Dominion defender. Shim was trying to cut the ball towards the center of the box when the whistle blew. Senior
Nicole DiPerna then took the penalty kick and converted it for her first goal of the season.
“It felt nice to get that goal under my belt and to win a conference game,” said DiPerna.
The Panthers added to their lead in the 32nd minute when DiPerna lobbed the ball to Shim, who chipped a shot past Old Dominion goalkeeper, Meredith Lenox, for the easy score. The goal was Shim's team-best fourth of the season.
FIU continued its offensive dominance in the second half. In the 52nd minute, freshman
Alyssa Robinson carried the ball into the Lady Monarchs' end but was tripped up by Jackie Stroud, which resulted in a yellow card for Stroud. Off of the free kick, junior
Johanna Volz headed the ball off of the post and in for her first goal of the season. Sophomore
Madlen Weinhardt was credited with her second assist of the season.
The Panthers would add one final goal in the 85th minute when sophomore
Morgan Morris challenged Old Dominion's Erin Kinz, who started the second half in net for the Lady Monarchs, on a one-on-one. Kinz was able to get a hand on Morris' shot, but the ball rolled into the back of the net.
Redshirt junior
Paula Zuluaga earner the victory, finishing with four saves on the day.
“I felt like we were very secure with our backline today,” said Zuluaga.”We have been practicing that a lot in practice, so it was great to see the on-field results.”
The Panthers will hit the road for the next three games, starting this Friday at Colorado College at 5 p.m.
