Box Score 2 MIAMI (Feb. 15, 2014) – The FIU baseball team (3-0) out-hit (26-6) and out-scored (18-1) the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-3) during a double header on Saturday from the FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Panthers opened the day with a dominant performance, downing Rutgers, 13-1. FIU registered 20 hits as 10 different Panthers got in the hit column. Four players had three hits apiece in the game with junior
Julius Gaines going 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored, junior Aramis Garica going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, junior
Josh Anderson going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and freshman
JC Escarra going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
FIU used four runs in the first and six runs in the third to put the game away and earn the team's second win to start the season.
Senior
Ty Sullivan (1-0) picked up the win giving up no runs and no hits in two innings of action, while striking out two. Rutgers' Jon Young was saddled with the loss, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits in 3.0 innings of action.
Game two saw FIU blank the Scarlet Knight, 5-0, in seven innings. Anderson and Garcia combined for four hits and four RBI to lead the Panthers to the shutout victory. Anderson went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Garcia hit 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Once again, the Panthers jumped out early on the Scarlet Knight, scoring three runs in the first and another run in the second. FIU held Rutgers to just two hits in the contest.
Junior Mike Ellis (1-0) earned the victory, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out three in five innings of action. Rutgers' hurler Donovan Waller picked up the loss, lasting just one inning, giving up three runs on three hits.
Both teams will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday, Feb. 16. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
