MIAMI (March 14, 2014) – The FIU softball team (19-8, 2-1 C-USA) just took three-of-four road games in the last two days, while pushing the No. 22 Notre Dame Fighting Irish to 13 innings in its only loss on the trip. The Panthers will now open up a three-game slate against the McNeese State Cowgirls this weekend from Lake Charles, La., with game times on Saturday being moved from 6:00 p.m. ET to 2:00 p.m. ET due to the threat of weather. The second game of the doubleheader will start shortly thereafter, with a noon first pitch still slated for Sunday.
One from 400
After picking up three victories over the last 48 hours, Head Coach Jake Schumann sits one win away from 400 career wins. He will be one-of-six head coaches in Conference USA to have 400-plus victories.
Panthers 1,000 Game on Saturday
FIU's second match-up against the Cowgirls on Saturday will mark the 1,000 game in FIU's 17 season. The program is 529-469 overall.
Scouting McNeese State
The Cowgirls rattled off nine-straight wins before falling to Houston Baptist, 4-2, on Thursday night. Behind Ashley Modzelewski's team-leading six homeruns, McNeese State has three players batting over .300 with a minimum 55 at bats. Modzelewski's 21 RBI also leads the team, with Lauren Langer leading in average (.398) and coming in season in RBI (16). The Cowgirls' ace in the circle is well and away Jamie Allred, who owns a 10-4 record in 93 2/3 innings pitch, collecting 87 strikeouts in 16 appearances.
The Cowgirls enter this weekend's action with Taylor Goree and Jamie Allred earing Southland Conference Player of the Week accolades. McNeese has been receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. This will be the first match-up in series history against the Cowgirls.
