Gomez Lifts No. 30 @FIUBaseball over Florida Memorial, 3-2

Box Score MIAMI (March 19, 2014) – Freshman Brandon Gomez knocked a single through the right side of the infield to give FIU a walk-off victory over Florida Memorial on Wednesday night, 3-2. Junior Aramis Garcia trotted in from third with two outs to score the winning run.

Gomez was the lone Panther with two hits in the game, as he roped a double earlier in the second inning. Garcia extended his hitting-streak to 15 games in the victory. Junior Mike Ellis earned his third victory of the season for the Panthers.

The Lions put up a two-spot in the fifth inning. The Panthers would respond in the seventh with two runs coming on two outs. Junior Brian Portelli was hit by a pitch with two outs, and was pinch-ran for by junior Roche Woodard. Freshman Gunnar McNeill walked and senior Tyler Hibbert was plunked by a pitch to load the bases. Junior L.K. Thompson delivered the big two-out, two-run double to knot the game up at two.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Garcia extended his hitting streak with a single, then advanced to second on a passed ball. He made it to third on a groundout, leading to Gomez's at-bat. With two outs and a full count, the Miami native hit a hard ground ball through the left side, scoring Garcia and giving the Panthers a 3-2 victory.
