MIAMI (March 21, 2014) – The FIU softball team (19-10, 2-1) concludes a 10-game road trip this weekend, as the Panthers get back into Conference USA action at UAB for a three-game series.
Jake Schumann Looks for 400th Win
Head Coach Jake Schumann enters Saturday's action with an overall record of 399-321-1, one win shy of 400 for his career. The 13-year head coach is in his third season with the Panthers and would be one-of-six head coaches in C-USA to eclipse 400 wins.
Scouting UAB
Ranked 21st in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll, the UAB Blazers hold a 15-13 overall record and are an even 3-3 within the conference. The team has played seven games against nationally ranked opponents this year, going 1-6 against those top 25 teams. The Blazers longest win streak has been four games, while they have lost a season-high three consecutive games. UAB is led by Cailtin Attfield, who has a team-high .418 batting average and .475 on-base percentage. Another Blazer, Kristen McGrath, has a team-best six home runs, 20 RBI and a .658 slugging percentage. The duo is tied atop the team with six doubles each, while Attfield also leads her team in hits with 38.
Leigh Streetman (12-6) is the clear ace of the Blazers' staff, owning a 1.57 ERA in 102 2/3 innings pitched. She's accumulated 111 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .210 batting average and only surrendering 27 walks. She's been named C-USA Pitcher of the Week the past two weeks.
Perennial favorites to win C-USA, the Blazers have made four-straight NCAA Tournament Appearances. Their first NCAA Super Regional Appearance came last season, as UAB was also the 2013 C-USA regular season champion.
Saturday's doubleheader will start at 2:00 p.m. ET, followed by a 4:00 p.m. first pitch. Sunday's 2:00 p.m. series finale will serve as UAB's Strike Out Cancer game.
