@FIUBASEBALL DROPS MIDWEEK CONTEST TO FAU, 5-1

Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. (May 13, 2014) – The FIU baseball team (35-16, 15-12) dropped its final midweek contest of 2014 to FAU on Wednesday night. Despite getting 11 hits, the Panthers stranded nine runners on base in the loss.
 
Sophomore Julius Gaines led the way for the Panthers, going 3-for-4 and stealing a base. Sophomore Edwin Rios and freshman Brandon Gomez each had two hits. FIU used nine pitchers in the loss, giving up just two earned runs combined.
 
In the top of the fourth, junior Josh Anderson and Rios led things off with back-to-back singles. Walks for junior Brian Portelli and Gomez resulted in the first run of the game for FIU, as the Panthers took a 1-0 lead. Despite FIU taking the lead, FAU came back and scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 3-1 advantage.
 
The Owls also worked two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a Billy Endris double, to increase its lead to 5-1.
 
The Panthers close out the C-USA regular season at Tulane, beginning this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
