Box Score MIAMI (April 5, 2014) – The FIU baseball team (23-8, 7-7 Conference USA) dropped its second contest to ODU on Saturday night by a count of 4-2. The Panthers were held to six hits in the loss.
Freshman
Cody Crouse put together a nice start, going seven innings, giving up seven hits, and two earned runs. Juniors
Julius Gaines and
Louis Silverio accounted for two hits each, while sophomore
Edwin Rios and junior
Brian Portelli each drove in a run in the ninth.
ODU scored its first run in the sixth inning, a two-out RBI infield single for Josiah Burney to give the Monarchs a 1-0 advantage.
In the eighth inning, Crouse was relieved by junior
Robby Kalaf. ODU's Nick Walker got a fastball and drilled a two-run homer to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead. The home run ended a streak of 270 1/3 innings where FIU pitching didn't allow a home run. An RBI groundout for ODU gave the Monarchs a 4-0 lead in the eighth.
The Panthers did plate two in the ninth and were able to send the tying run to the plate. Rios roped an RBI double to center and Portelli singled to left to drive in an additional run.
