Panthers Clip the Hurricanes, 150-149, to Finish Season Undefeated in Dual Meets

FIU goes a perfect 10-0 in dual meets for the 2014-15 season

CORAL GABLES, Fla.  (Jan. 31, 2015) – The FIU swimming and diving team successfully completed an undefeated season in dual meets, edging the Miami Hurricanes in epic fashion on Saturday afternoon in Coral Gables by a score of 150-149. With the win, FIU heads into the Conference USA Championships with a perfect 10-0 record in dual meets this season. It marks the first time in program history that the Panthers completed a perfect season in dual meets.

"What a meet today," said head coach Randy Horner. "These are the type of meets you go to college to compete in. In-town rivalry that comes down to the last relay? It was an awesome win for the team over a team that was really pumped up for us. Now we are ready to close the book on the dual meet season and get ready to make a run at a C-USA Championship."

The meeting between the Panthers and the Hurricanes was the first matchup between the two schools in any sport since the women's volleyball teams met on September 11, 2010.

After being part of three victories yesterday at Florida Atlantic, freshman Silvia Scalia bettered that accomplishment by picking up four total wins on Saturday, three individual and one in a relay. Her dominance in backstroke events this season continued as she earned a mark of 55.56 in the 100 and 2:00.23 in the 200 to earn two wins. Her third individual win came in the 200 IM, as she touched the wall in 2:04.89.

Freshman Kyna Pereira also had a big day on Saturday for the Panthers to cap off a great weekend for her as well. The South Africa native earned nine points for the Panthers by earning a first place finish in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a time of 10:06.53. She followed that up with a mark of 4:58.45 in the 500 freestyle to earn the victory. Pereira has yet to finish worse than first in freestyle swims of 500 or 1000 yards this season, as she is a perfect 5-0.

The Panthers success in the freestyle events continued with freshman Jennifer Alfani swimming the 50 freestyle in 24.11 seconds to finish first. Senior Johanna Gustafsdottir swam in her final dual meet of her fine career and picked up a win in the 200 breaststroke, punching in a time of 2:19.88.

FIU picked up a relay victory on Saturday, as senior Klara Andersson, freshman Letizia Bertelli and sophomore Jennifer Deist joined Scalia to open the meet with a win the 200 medley relay.

FIU now turns its attention to the Conference USA Championships, where the Panthers are expected to compete for the title. The Championships will run Feb. 18-21 in Knoxville, Tenn.
