Box Score DELAND, Fla. (Sept. 6, 2015) – The FIU men's soccer team (2-2-0) won its second-straight match on Sunday night, earning a 3-0 victory over the (RV) Stetson Hatters.
Sunday's game featured three scores from players who recorded their first career goals in an FIU uniform. Freshman
Santiago Patino and junior
Jamar Campion-Hinds each recorded their first collegiate goal. Sophomore
Brad Fountain also scored, marking the sixth of his career and his first in an FIU kit.
The Panthers dominated nearly every facet of the game, recording 24 total shots while holding Stetson to just five. FIU's back line was strong, not allowing the Hatters to get many opportunities on the night, as Stetson did not get one shot on net.
FIU brought the attack in the early stages, forcing a corner kick less than a minute into the contest. The Panthers got two shots off in the first three minutes, with the first coming from sophomore
Donald Tomlinson, who struck the post. Junior
Juan Benedetty also tallied a shot in the third minute that went wide. Then in the 10th minute, Fountain put two attempts on goal in a 30-second span, first on a header and then a shot as both were saved. FIU had three corner kicks in the first eight minutes.
The high pressure brought on by the Panthers paid off in the 16
th minute as FIU got on the board. Patino crossed a ball from the right side of the box where he found the foot of Fountain. From there, the England native knocked it upper nineties to put the Panthers on the board. The goal for Fountain was his first in an FIU uniform and the sixth of his career.
Patino's strong night was not done yet. In the 27
thminute, the freshman gave the Panthers a two-goal advantage on a breakaway. Junior goalkeeper
Arthur Clapot earned his career assist as he connected with Patino, who took it all the way for the goal. The score was the first of Patino's career.
In the second half, FIU got the early pressure, as Campion-Hinds fired a shot on goal that was saved. Stetson's best opportunity yet was in the 55
th minute, when Eyal Cohen's shot hit the crossbar. FIU came back on the other end, when sophomore
Paul Marie had an opportunity that got by the keeper but a team save was made.
FIU increased its lead to 3-0 when Campion-Hinds put away his first career goal. Junior
Nicholas Midttun earned an assist on the goal.
The Panthers are off until Thursday, when they host Penn at 7p.m. at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
