FIU (1-1), Stetson (2-0)
Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017 | 7 p.m.
Miami, Florida | Ocean Bank Convocation Center
The Basics
- The FIU men's basketball team played its second game in the last three days on Sunday as Stetson visited the Ocean Bank Convocation Center, pitting two teams that each won their season-openers on Friday. The Panthers, however, were not able to enjoy the home court advantage for the complete weekend as the Hatters handed FIU a hard-fought 70-64 overtime loss, dropping the Panthers to 1-1 on the year. Stetson improves to 2-0.
- Stetson guard B.J. Glasford drained a three-point shot with 25.3 seconds left in the game to put the Hatters up 56-53, but FIU's
Brian Beard, Jr. (Rancho Cucamonga, California) drained his own trey with six seconds left on the clock in regulation to even the contest and send the game into overtime. The Hatters had a last-second half-court shot that went just to the right of the rim. Stetson then outscored the Panthers 14-8 in the extra session en route to the win.
-
Eric Lockett (Warner Robbins, Georgia) led the Panthers with 19 points and eight rebounds while
Trejon Jacob (Raleigh, North Carolina) added 15 points and a game- and career-high nine rebounds. Beard finished the game with 10 points. The trio all logged better than 40 minutes with Beard Jr. and Lockett recorded 43 minutes each and Jacob with 40.
- Neither team shot well during the contest, with FIU hitting 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the field and Stetson slightly better at 37.9 percent (25-of-66).
- The contest saw 19 lead changes and eight ties with neither team leading by more than seven points, with that advantage being held by Stetson, 21-14, with 5:24 left in the first half. The Panthers' biggest lead was a five-point margin, 35-30, with 18:39 left in the second half, when Lockett converted on a layup.
Stat of the Game
FIU committed 16 turnovers in the loss, its most since handing the ball over 18 times at Southern Miss on Feb. 16, 2017. Those 16 miscues led to a 16-6 points-off-turnover advantage for the Hatters.
