Black & Gold Shootout – Day One
The Basics
- The FIU men's basketball team took its show on the road for the first time during the 2017-18 season in the first of three games at the Black & Gold Shootout in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hosted by UW Milwaukee. The Panthers took the court on day one of the shootout against Elon, dropping a heartbreaking 95-87 triple-overtime thriller to the Phoenix. FIU was unable to hold a 13-point second-half lead. It was the Panthers' second-straight loss.
- The Panthers placed four players in the double-figure scoring column, led by
Eric Lockett (Warner Robins, Georgia) with a career-high 21 points.
Isaiah Banks (Conyers, Georgia) added a career-best 17 points,
Brian Beard, Jr. (Rancho Cucamonga, California) a career-best 16 points and
Trejon Jacob (Raleigh, North Carolina) 10 points. Lockett also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for his first career double-double in a Panthers' uniform.
- FIU shot 51.5 percent (17-for-33) in the first half, including 38.9 percent (7-for-18) en route to a 43-39 lead at the intermission. That percentage would level as the Panthers finished the game hitting for 40.5 percent (34-of-84) from the field on the night and 32.4 percent (12-for-37) from long range. However, FIU's Achilles' heel on the night would be its 46.7 percent (7-for-15) shooting from the free-throw line.
- The Panthers led by as many as 13 points in the second half, 53-40, on a layup by Beard, Jr. and then with 7:29 left in regulation, 61-48, on a
Cordell Veira (Etobioke, Canada) three-pointer. FIU would then be outscored 18-5 through the end of regulation, capped by a Dmitri Thompson three with five seconds left in regulation.
- Elon had a chance to win the game at the end of the first overtime after Beard, Jr. missed the second of his two free throws with eight seconds left on the clock. The Phoenix's Steven Santa Ana took the rebound off the miss and threw the ball the length of the court to Brian Dawkins who was running up the middle of the floor. Dawkins looked to have an uncontested layup, however Lockett got back defensively and blocked the shot at the buzzer.
- After each team scored just four points apiece in the second overtime, Elon broke away in the third outscoring the Panthers 16-8 for the win.
Stat of the Game
After shooting 51.5 percent (17-for-33) in the first half, the Panthers went 17-for-51 (33.3 percent) in the second half and through overtime in the loss.
