Black & Gold Shootout – Day Two
Â
The Basics
- The FIU men's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Saturday – following a tough triple-overtime setback to Elon last night – looking to snap a short two-game losing streak against Milwaukee on day two of the Black & Gold Shootout in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. FIU got a career-high 23 points from
Eric Lockett (Warner Robins, Georgia), 13 points from
Brian Beard, Jr. (Rancho Cucamonga, California) and 11 points from
Trejon Jacob (Raleigh, North Carolina), however the rest of the Panthers accounted for just four points, as Milwaukee defeated the Panthers, 66-51. FIU drops to 1-3 on the year, while Milwaukee improves to 3-1.
Â
- The Panthers shot just 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the field, including 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from behind the three-point arc, and 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the free-throw line. On the flip-side, Milwaukee hit for 48 percent (24-for-50) from the field, 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from behind the arc, and 81.8 percent (9-for-11) from the charity stripe.
Â
- Milwaukee looked as if it was going to walk away with the game early on, taking as much as a 12-point lead, 26-14, with 5:57 left in the first half. FIU, however, put together a 10-0 run of its own to cut the Milwaukee lead to two points, 26-24, on a layup by
Trejon Jacob with 3:58 left in the half. Jacob, who also got fouled on the play, stepped to the line and hit the free throw pulling the Panthers to within one.
Eric Lockett then gave FIU the lead, 29-28, with 1:07 left in the half before going into the break down two, 31-29. The Panthers shot just 37 percent (10-for-27) from the field in the first stanza, including a dismal 2-for-10 (20 percent) performance from three-point range.
Â
- The Panthers came out of the locker room at the break cold as Milwaukee started the second stanza on a 15-4 run to take a 49-33 lead and break the game open, on a layup by Brett Prahl with 12:27 left in the game. FIU cut the Milwaukee lead down to 11, 53-42, on a three by Lockett with 6:10 left, but that was as close as the Panthers got the rest of the way.
