The Bucs Stop the Streak: CSU edges FIU, 6-5, to snap Panthers' seven-game win streak

Jason Miller's RBI single in the top of the ninth inning scored Kyle Vesnesky with the go-ahead run to get Charleston Southern past FIU, 6-5, and end the Panthers' seven-game winning streak Saturday afternoon at the FIU ballpark.

Before Saturday, FIU had won 12 straight games against Charleston Southern dating back to 1985. The Panthers now lead the all-time series with the Buccaneers 12-2.

Starting the ninth inning FIU and CSU were tied 4-4 before Vesnesky drew a leadoff walk against Franklin Van Gurp (0-1). Nate Blanchard followed with a bunt single which ended the day for Van Gurp.

Chandler Raiden came in from the bullpen and got the first out on a sacrifice bunt. However, with one out and runners at second and third base, Miller singled to right scoring Vesnesky. Blanchard was also able to score after FIU right fielder Adam Sevario bobbled the ball.

The Buccaneers (9-4) led 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth. The Panthers (9-7) drew a run closer on a solo home run by C.J. Witkowski off Ryan Stoudemire (3-0) but the right-hander got the final two outs to salvage one game of the three-game series for CSU.

FIU capped off a stretch of nine games in nine days by going 7-2. The Panthers played four games against Manhattan, two against Miami and three against CSU. FIU won all three series and lost just the first game of the nine-game swing to Manhattan and the final game of the nine to the Bucs.

Saturday afternoon the teams traded a pair of runs in the first inning on two-run doubles. Brandon Gragilla doubled to left center off FIU starter Dominic LoBrutto to score two runs. Zack Soria answered for the Panthers with a double down the left field line plating Sevario, who doubled to lead off the inning, and Javier Valdes, who singled.

FIU trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Soria hit a solo home run to left to tie the score. It was Soria's second home run in as many days. Soria was 2 for 4 with three RBI.

The Panthers leave Miami for the first time this season Tuesday when they open a two-game series at Stetson at 6:30 p.m. that night in Deland.
