FIU had no problem with Florida Gulf Coast for the second straight night as the Panthers shut out the Eagles, 7-0, Wednesday night at the FIU ballpark.
The Panthers (23-15) swept the two-game series from the Eagles (28-12) after FIU won 12-5 in Fort Myers Tuesday night.
FIU jumped on FGCU starter Peyton Gray (3-2) in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday.
Irving Lopez was hit by a pitch to start the inning and
Zack Soria singled to left. Both Panthers scored after
JC Escarra roped a double down the right field line.
Lopez and Soria teamed up in the third for another run. Lopez doubled into the right center field gap and later scored on Soria's single to center.
Gray was relieved in the fifth after hitting
Derek Cartaya with a pitch to lead off the frame. Sterling Koerner came in from the bullpen and was greeted with a two-run home run by Lopez to make it 5-0 FIU.
Another RBI double by Escarra and an RBI single by
Christian Coipel in the bottom of the eighth capped off the FIU scoring.
Senior right-hander
Chris Mourelle (4-2), making his first mid-week start since his freshman season, threw six shutout innings, allowed four hits and tied a season-high with seven strikeouts to notch the victory.
Escarra was 3 for 4 with three RBI. Lopez and Soria were each 2 for 4.
