NORFOLK, Va. -- FIU put together a five-run sixth inning to defeat No. 25 Old Dominion, 10-9, in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday at Bud Metheny Complex in Norfolk.
Old Dominion (34-16, 17-9 Conference USA) coasted in the first game of the doubleheader with FIU (28-24, 12-14) winning 21-1.
Down 6-5 in the second game, the Panthers got a single from
Zach Files to start the sixth before
Irving Lopez doubled off Adam Bainbridge (7-3) down the right field line to score Files and tie the score.
One batter later,
Zack Soria slapped a single to right to score Lopez with the go-ahead run. The Panthers weren't done in the decisive inning.
JC Escarra and
Javier Valdes also plated runs with RBI singles.
Tyler Myrick started for FIU and went six innings, allowed 10 hits and six runs. Myrick (5-2) did finish his outing with three consecutive scoreless innings to give his teammates a chance to come back.
Dominic LoBrutto pitched the final three innings to record his team-leading fourth save. After a shaky seventh inning in which the Monarchs picked up three runs off LoBrutto, the junior left-hander retired eight of the final 10 batters to preserve the win.
Lopez was 4 for 6 with a solo home run and three RBI. The senior shortstop fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. In Lopez's final two at-bats, needing a triple, he singled and popped out to third baseman Nick Walker.
Lopez was trying to become just the second FIU player in the Sunblazers/Panthers baseball history to hit for the cycle. Former FIU Sunblazers infielder Joe Hughes hit for the cycle against Central Florida in 1980.
Including Lopez, FIU's first six batters each had at least two hits.
Jack Schaaf, Soria,
Kenny Meimerstorf and Escarra each had two hits. Valdes was 3 for 5. Files was 2 for 5.
Old Dominion 21, FIU 1 (Game 1 of the doubleheader)
The Monarchs scored a combined 15 runs in the fourth and fifth innings off FIU pitching to ease past the Panthers to start Saturday afternoon.
FIU spoiled the shutout bid by ODU pitching in the eighth.
Derek Cartaya led off the inning with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by Files to center. Files was 4 for 7 in the doubleheader.
FIU and ODU conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
