@FIUMensSoccer Drops 3-0 Decision at Old Dominion

Panthers miss out on opportunity for second-straight Conference USA regular season title.

Game Details
Old Dominion 3, FIU 0
FIU (7-8, 5-2 C-USA), RV Old Dominion (10-3-2, 6-1 C-USA)
Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018 | 7 p.m.
Norfolk, Virginia | ODU Soccer Complex

The Basics
- The FIU men's soccer team had an opportunity to secure its second-straight Conference USA regular season title, when it faced Old Dominion on Sunday night in Norfolk, however it was the host Monarchs that had the upper hand in a 3-0 win over the Panthers at the ODU Soccer Complex. FIU, Old Dominion and Kentucky all came into Sunday with 5-1 records and in a three-way tie for first place. The Panthers had already defeated the Wildcats, 3-2, on Oct. 7. A win over ODU would have sealed the deal for FIU, instead it will be the Monarchs and Kentucky playing for the regular season title next Friday when they meet with matching 6-1 conference records in the regular season finale. FIU closes out the regular season at home against South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m.

- The Panthers, who drop to 7-8 overall and 5-2 in C-USA, were outshot 14-8, on the night, while Old Dominion also held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Joris Ahlinvi (Bordeaux, France) led the Panthers with four of the team's eight shots, including two on net.

- Old Dominion held Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) without a shot in the loss, marking the first time this season, and the first time since Nov. 16, 2017, against Omaha in the NCAA Tournament, that Patino didn't register a shot.

- The Monarchs got on the board first, in the 40' minute, when Max Wilschrey took a pass from Niko Klosterhalfen from five yards out in the box, and on the right side of the goal, and fired a shot to the far post beating FIU keeper Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France) to make the score, 1-0. That was the only score of the opening half as ODU also held a 6-4 shots advantage in the first 45 minutes. Jules Desportes (Evreux, France) had an opportunity to even the match up, in the 43' minute, off a set piece, but his header found its way wide of the net.

- Klosterhalfen got into the action in the 51' minute, getting a pass from Daniel Corona and finding the back of the net, giving the Monarchs a 2-0 edge. Old Dominion got an insurance goal in the 58' minute when Wilscrey crossed as pass from the far right side and found Kostas Mylonas, four yards in front of the goal, who headed the offering in.

- Fauroux finished the match with three saves for FIU. Desportes and Adam Hassan (Davie, Florida/Western) also finished the night with two shots.

"We have to be better, bottom line. If we want to continue to play this game, we must learn how to be stronger, both mentally and physically. Now we focus on our last regular season game against South Carolina." – FIU Head Coach Kevin Nylen
