Panthers Silence Rattlers, 77-54

FIU earns first win of the season with blowout victory

MIAMI (Nov. 23, 2018) – Redshirt junior Chelsea Guimaraes scored 21 points on Friday, as the FIU women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the season after defeating the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers, 77-54.

With the win, FIU improved to 1-5 overall, while FAMU dropped to 0-4 on the year. The Panthers will play the winner of Friday afternoon's game between Omaha and Campbell, with the winner-take-all game being played at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. The losers of Friday's contests will play at 12 p.m. ET Sunday.

The Panthers dominated the glass, earning a 50-22 margin on the boards. That margin helped the Panthers cash in on second-chance points as the Panthers outscored the Rattlers 18-2 in that category.

FIU had four players in double-figures on Friday, with Guimaraes' 21 leading the way. TaMiracle Taylor, Kylee O'Hara and Ce'Nara Skanes scored 13,11 and 11 respectively. Skanes posted her second double-double of the year, adding 14 rebounds to her 11 points. Taylor just missed out on her first career double-double, after finishing the game with a career-best nine rebounds.

FAMU led 11-10 following the first quarter, but the lead was short-lived for the Rattlers as FIU bounced back nicely in the second quarter with a much-improved shooting effort to take an 11-point lead into the locker room. FIU shot 60% from the floor in the third quarter to stretch its lead to 13 entering the fourth quarter, as FIU bookended the game with a 22-12 spurt to win by 23 points.
