MIAMI, FLA. (Feb. 4, 2018) –The FIU women's tennis team (3-1) defeated the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (1-1), 4-2,
on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The victory improved FIU to 6-1 all-time versus the Eagles and gave the Panthers a 3-1 record in dual matches this Spring season.
FIU wasted no time, taking the first point of the day with three-straight doubles victories. The duo of
Maryna Veksler and Ulyana G
rib defeated FGCU's Julia Ascua and Julianna Curtis, 6-2, while the tandem of seniors Andrea Lazaro and Nerma Caluk downed Maja Ornberg and Madison Gallegos, 6-2. FIU's No. 3 pair of senior Mina Markovic and freshman Sandra Bozinovic won over Bridget Forster and Sofia Perez, 7-5.
In singles action, Lazaro, currently at No. 3 in the Oracle/ ITA Singles Ranking topped
Ascua, 6-1, 6-4. Grib defeated Perez, 6-4, 7-5, and senior Caluk sealed the victory with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Forster. FIU's singles loss came from Veksler, who lost to Ornberg 6-2, 6-3 and Bozinovic fell to FGCU's Laura Falceto with a 6-3, 7-6 score. Markovic was not able to finish her match against Gallegos.
The Panthers will next travel to Jacksonville to face the North Florida Ospreys on Saturday, February 10. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
