The Basics
  • FIU's seven-run fifth inning broke open a two-run game as the Panthers won their second game played at the D9 Citrus Classic II, 12-6, over UC Santa Barbara Friday afternoon at ESPN'S Wide World of Sports.
  • Megan Kugelmann pitched a complete game allowing six runs, five earned and recording two strikeouts in earning her third win on the season.
  • Venessa Gallegos went 2-fo-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Julia Gilbert was 1-for-2 with two RBI and three walks.
  • UC Santa Barbara struck first with a run in each of the first two innings to lead, 2-0. FIU tied the game, 2-2, in the top of third after a double steal including a steal of home plate by Gallegos. The Panthers' first run of the game came on Gilbert's RBI single.
  • UC Santa Barbara led 4-2 heading into the fifth inning. Gallegos' RBI single got it going for FIU. Rivera drove in the next run to tie the game. A bases loaded walk, UCSB error and RBI single led to three more runs as FIU led, 9-5, at the end of the fifth.
  • The Panthers tacked on three more runs in the top of seventh on two UCSB errors and a bases loaded walk to go ahead 12-5. UCSB added a home run in the bottom of the seventh to end the scoring.
  • Jackie Schoff, Rivera, Natalie Orcutt, Tori Jones and Kassandra Castle each had one hit for FIU.

The Basics
  • FIU's Shannon Saile struck out 10 in seven innings, but Troy used two long balls to defeat the Panthers, 4-0, Friday in the first game of the D9 Citrus Classic II.
  • Julia Gilbert and Jessica Rivera each had one hit for the Panthers.
  • Troy's Logan Calhoun hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to seal the win for the Trojans. Troy scored the game's first run in the top of second on a solo home run by Brooke Echols.
Next up for FIU
The Panthers will continue play in the D9 Citrus Classic II tomorrow with two more games. Game one against UMass is set for 12:30 p.m. and game two against Notre Dame is set for 3 p.m. The D9 Citrus Classic II is taking place at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.
