Jacksonville State scored six runs in the top of the 12
th inning to defeat FIU, 12-6, Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at the FIU ballpark.
The Gamecocks improved to 7-2. The Panthers dropped to 4-5.
Tied 6-6 in the 12
th, JSU got three consecutive RBI singles to snap the tie.
FIU rallied to send the game into extra innings.
Down 5-1, the Panthers used solo home runs from
Austin Shenton and
Eddie Silva to help lead their comeback.
Silva was 3 for 5 with two solo home runs and three RBI.
Logan Allen also had three hits, going 3 for 6.
FIU tied the score at 6 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Silva's RBI single brought the Panthers within one run.
Christian Khawam evened the game with a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers used nine pitchers Friday and got nifty relief outings from freshmen
Daniel Brown and
Steven Casey. Brown went 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run. Casey pitched 3 1/3 scoreless relief to finish the eighth inning and pitch through the 11
th.
FIU and JSU play the middle game of the series Saturday at 6 p.m.
