SAN ANTONIO – Dylan Rock singled home Ben Brookover in the bottom of the 10
th inning to lead UTSA past FIU, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.
The Roadrunners (21-17, 9-8 Conference USA) took two of three games from the Panthers (18-21, 8-10 C-USA) in the series.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10
th, Brookover doubled off
Tyler Myrick (1-2) to deep center field. Rock followed with a single just past the outstretched glove of
Derek Cartaya into short left field bringing home the decisive run.
FIU rallied from a 4-1 deficit late in the game to force extra innings.
Freshman
Jose Garcia hit his 10
th home run of the season in the seventh to close the gap to 4-2.
Garcia leads the Panthers in long balls and has now hit the second most home runs for an FIU freshman passing Edwin Rios, who hit nine home runs in 2013. Jabari Henry holds the FIU freshman record for home runs with 12 in 2010.
FIU tied the score 4-4 in the eighth on four straight singles with two outs. Cartaya bunted for a hit.
Austin Shenton singled.
Eddie Silva singled to score Cartaya and
Christian Khawam's single scored Shenton to tie it.
On deck, FIU closes its crosstown series with Miami on Wednesday in Coral Gables. The Panthers defeated the Hurricanes earlier this season. First pitch for Wednesday's game from Mark Light Stadium is at 6 p.m.
