FIU Shuts Out Charlotte Twice in C-USA Doubleheader, 1-0; 9-0

MIAMI– FIU pitchers Megan Kugelmann, Shannon Saile and Kendahl Dunford combined for 12 shutout innings and senior first baseman Kasandra Castle homered in both games as the Panthers (28-23, 12-7 C-USA) swept a Conference USA doubleheader over Charlotte. FIU won the first game 1-0, and took the second game, 9-0, in five innings.
 
Castle's solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the game-winner in game one. Kugelmann struck out five in six innings while Saile struck out two batters in the final inning to get the save. Saile won for the 17th time this season to lead the Panthers to the win in game two. She struck out four in three innings of work before giving way to Dunford in the final two innings.
 
Castle and Gilbert each had three hits on the day.

The Basics
  • Kugelmann struck out five and held the 49ers to two hits in six scoreless innings.
  • Charlotte and FIU were scoreless until Castle launched her seventh home run of the season over the right field wall on a 1-2 count in the sixth inning.
  • Saile earned her first save of the season striking out two in the final inning.
  • Castle finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI while Jackie Schoff and Venessa Gallegos each had one hit.

The Basics
  • Julia Gilbert's two-run homer in the bottom of the second put the Panthers ahead, 2-0.
  • FIU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 9-0 lead and never look back. Castle's two-run home run, her eighth of the season, started things off for the Panthers putting them ahead, 4-0. Gallegos RBI double made it 5-0. Kayla Whitehead and Erin Eiland drove in two more runs and FIU scored on a Charlotte error for the nine-run lead.
  • Gilbert finished game two 3-for-3 with two RBI.
  • FIU scored nine runs on 10 hits.
  • Saile improved to 17-9 on the season striking out four in three innings and only giving up two hits. Dunford pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit.
UP NEXT
FIU closes out its home schedule Sunday when the Panthers host Charlotte at 1 p.m. The Panthers will honor five seniors (Kasandra Castle, Araceli Peralta, Erin Eiland, Julia Gilbert, Michaela Mills) during pre-game.
