MIAMI– FIU senior designated player
Michaela Mills provided a spark on senior day and junior pitcher
Megan Kugelmann came on in relief to pick up her second win of the series as the Panthers completed the series sweep of Charlotte, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Felsberg Field. Mills finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and jump-started a five-run sixth inning for the Panthers who moved to 29-23 overall and 13-7 in Conference USA play – good enough for second place heading into the final regular season weekend.
FIU starting pitcher
Shannon Saile (17-9) set a single season school record bringing her 2018 total to 247 strikeouts after picking up nine more strikeouts against the 49ers (15-32, 6-15 C-USA). She broke her own record of 240 strikeouts that she shared with Kasey Barrett. Saile struck out 240 last season as a freshman while Barrett accomplished the feat in 2010.
Saile pitched five innings, allowed four runs on seven hits and walked two before giving way to Kugelmann. Kugelmann tossed the final two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to improve to 8-7 on the season.
Tatyana Forbes also added a pair of hits going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
