Stetson pushed a run across in the top of the ninth inning to slip past FIU, 2-1, Tuesday night at Infinity Insurance Park.
The Hatters (35-11) won both games from the Panthers (21-23) in the season series.
Eric Foggo's bloop single off
Christian Santana (2-3) scored Andrew MacNeil with the go-ahead run in the final frame for Stetson.
The Panthers trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth before tying the score on a wacky sequence.
Eddie Silva and
Jose Garcia walked to start the eighth.
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. dropped down a sacrifice bunt that Hatters closer Brooks Wilson threw to third baseman Jonathan Meola for the force out. Meola's throw to first base got past second baseman Bruce Martin covering the bag. Martin then threw to second base to try and nab Hampton, but the throw went into short left field allowing Garcia to score and Hampton to be safe at second.
The low-scoring game was the result of solid starts by both starting pitchers.
FIU sophomore right-hander
Nick MacDonald pitched six innings, allowed just two hits and a run while striking out six.
SU junior right-hander Joey Gonzalez threw seven shutout innings and also struck out six.
FIU hits the road Wednesday to take on Florida Gulf Coast. The first pitch between the Panthers and the Eagles from Swanson Stadium on Wednesday is at 6 p.m.
