Florida Atlantic scored five runs in the eighth inning to break a tie score and get past FIU, 11-4, Friday night at Infinity Insurance Park.
The Owls improved to 31-13-1 overall and 15-6-1 in Conference USA play. The Panthers are now 21-25 overall and 10-12 in C-USA.
FAU loaded the bases in the eighth and scored its first two runs of the inning when Cody Wilson and Kevin Abraham were each hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Pinch-hitter Diamond Johnson followed with a three-run triple to make it 8-3.
Earlier in the game FIU took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by
Derek Cartaya and
Austin Shenton.
After the Owls tied the score 2-2 in the top of the third inning,
Javier Valdes's RBI single gave the Panthers the lead back at 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
Valdes was 3 for 4, including a double with two RBI.
Jose Garcia and
Eddie Silva were each 2 for 5.
The Panthers and Owls play the middle game of the series Saturday at 6 p.m.
