Panthers Split Saturday in Fort Myers

FIU returns home to host the Panther Invitational on Feb. 22-24

FORT MYERS, Florida (Feb. 16, 2019) – The FIU softball team closed out play at the FGCU Tournament on Saturday, as the Panthers spilt games against Memphis and Lamar.

The Panthers fell 6-0 against Memphis, before rallying to beat Lamar 8-5 to cap the day. FIU is now 6-3 on the year, with the Panther Invitational set for next weekend at Felsberg Field.

Rebecca Koskey and Jessica Rivera led the Panthers at the plate, with each batter earning a two-RBI double against Lamar in the afternoon session. Koskey finished with three hits on the day, while Rivera and Jackie Schoff each collected two.

In the circle, Megan Kugelmann earned the first blemish on her record for the season, as she allowed four runs to pick up the loss. The senior is now 3-1 on the year. Allison Muraskin earned the win for FIU against Lamar, after coming in relief to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings. The sophomore is now 2-2 on the year.

In the first game of the day, Memphis was on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Tigers went on to score four more runs, two coming in the top of the fourth inning and one in each of the last two innings, as FIU dropped a 6-0 decision.

In game two, Lamar also scored early, but the Panthers bounced back to tie the game in the second inning after a throwing error brought home Brittany Phillips. Trailing 5-1, the Panthers would score seven unanswered as FIU posted a seven-run sixth inning to jump ahead.

Back-to-back doubles by Rivera and Koskey got the rally started, before Natalie Orcutt tripled to center field to give the Panthers the lead for good. An RBI single by Madison Lewis and an RBI double by Tori Jones padded the lead, as the Panthers earned an 8-5 advantage before Muraskin held Lamar scoreless in the final two innings for the victory.
