FIU Splits Saturday at Panther Invitational

FIU downs Rutgers to cap Saturday with 4-3 win

MIAMI (Feb. 23, 2019) – The FIU softball team improved to 9-4 on the season after the Panthers capped Saturday with a 4-3 win over Big-10 foe Rutgers.

FIU dropped its first game of the day against Monmouth, 2-0, before rallying to beat Rutgers in the night cap on Saturday.

FIU's Megan Kugelmann picked up the win over Rutgers, after pitching six innings before Kendahl Dunford slammed the door shut on a Scarlett Knight comeback to earn her second save of the season. Kugelmann is now 4-1 on the season.

Natalie Orcutt was 2-for-3 at the plate against Rutgers, earning the go-ahead, three-run homer that propelled the Panthers past the Scarlett Knights for the eventual 4-3 win.

FIU will close out the Panther Invitational against Columbia on Sunday at 11:15 a.m., with the home team looking to go 4-1 on the weekend.

In game one, Monmouth jumped ahead 2-0 in the third inning after a Hawk batter knocked a two-run shot over the left field wall. The Panthers outhit the Hawks 5-4 but couldn't overcome the third inning homer. Allison Muraskin took the loss, as her record drops to 2-3 on the year.

The night capper saw Rutgers hit the long ball as well, as the Scarlett Knights had solo shots in the first and second innings to jump ahead 2-0 early.

Jessica Rivera sparked an FIU rally in the bottom of the fifth inning however, as she singled to left field and brought home Alexis Johns to narrow the gap to 2-1. With two runners on and just a few batters later, Natalie Orcutt smashed a ball over the right field wall to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead.

FIU would surrender one run in the seventh inning as the bases would become loaded with Scarlett Knights and two outs on the board. A passed ball was recovered by AnnMarie Cooker as the Panther catcher made the tag at the plate to officially end the Rutgers threat and give FIU the 4-3 victory.
